A step towards sustainability in the Colombian chemical value chain

On 17 March 2022, UNIDO organized a webinar “Eco-design of containers and packaging, a tool for sustainability”. This online event had more than 140 attendees and the participation of experts from local and international entities such as National Business Association of Colombia – ANDI and National Perfumery and Cosmetics Association-STANPA from Spain.

During this event, the Manual for Eco-design of Packaging for the Chemical Industry was launched. This document was developed by the UNIDO and the Plastics and Rubber Research and Training Institute-ICIPC. It contains guidelines, strategies and case studies that provide insightful knowledge to help the diverse sectors of the chemical industry to smoothly transition into eco-design packaging solutions for their products.

“UNIDO, as part of its Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP) Colombia, has developed this document to improve the ability of companies in the chemical value chain to meet with technical and sustainability requirements demanded by local and international markets, being a useful guide that can be applied globally” said Helen Jhoana Mier, Chief Technical Advisor of the GQSP Colombia.

This comprehensive manual includes an overview of the different types of packaging, life cycle assessment and good practices to achieve an eco-design of containers. It explores different strategies for packaging in sectors such as paintings, oils, cosmetics and even in the agroindustrial sector. Sustainability, innovation and compliance with international requirements are some of the key elements that companies need to have in order to take advantage of the market opportunities.

The Quality Programme for the Chemical Value Chain -  Global Quality and Standards Programme Colombia (GQSP Colombia) is one of the 12 country projects of the Global Quality and Standards Programme. It is implemented by UNIDO and financed by Switzerland, through its State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism through Colombia Productiva.
